Donnie Darko and Roberta Sparrow

Donnie Darko Fan

If you are reading this page and are a fan of the cult film Donnie Darko and you were left feeling empty by the DVD release of S. Darko or Samantha Darko because of huge plot holes and unrelated hoop-la then I hope you will enjoy what I have to say here. I couldn't believe they made a sequel to Donnie Darko, I thought... "Oh god don't let them mess up the story!" and what would ya know, they did.

Plot Holes in S. Darko

Okay, first off I just need to point out to anyone that actually watched Donnie Darko and who even paid attention to the film had to see that the biggest hole in S. Darko is continuity, because Donnie Darko died as the jet engine fell from the hole torn between his world and the tangent universe in the past before he ever met Frank or Gretchen and hence never met them, never saw Frank and never had the book written by Roberta Sparrow (Grandma Death) that was given to him by Mr. Monnitoff the science teacher. After Donnie realizes he is already dead and that he has to complete the events that are unfolding so the original time line can finish it's course and reset the balance of the universe so that tangent universe can collapse, he dies and the world is back to normal. But here was the kicker for me, Samantha Darko some how has the book! The book that never made it into her brothers hands. Not only that but some how Iraq Jack has visions of Frank the manipulated dead person that was only related to Donnie in the first movie! Frank and Gretchen were there to help Donnie complete the events that would save the universe from collapse. Then we learn that Samantha Darko was adopted by Donnie's parents? This was never even alluded to in the first film at all. They killed the story, I tried to get past the fact that they didn't follow the story like they should have, but then having the meteor storm at the end with that creepy nerd guy that was (changing)... I mean COME ON! This just blew it all for me. By the end of the movie I was about ready to just throw in the towel on the entire thing.

Grandma Death

Redemption

So in my anger I went back to look at the story of Donnie Darko again and I saw something that could redeem my favorite movie...

Grandma Death or Roberta Sparrow.

In truth without Roberta Sparrow, Donnie wouldn't have been able to make the connections he made with the cord path that he called God's Channel to Mr. Monnitoff. Reading the book gave him insight on what he had to do. She was there everyday at the mail box waiting for him to come because she knew that one day he'd be there, that she was just as key to the story as Donnie in the fact that Frank wouldn't have hit Gretchen if she'd not been in the road, that Donnie had to face his fear of being and dying alone. Roberta Sparrow's story is only hinted at in Donnie Darko.

So what happened to Roberta Sparrow in October of 1944 that made her write the book and join the convent at Saint John Alexandria Virginia. What were the events that she had witnessed or been able to see to write the book and then stay around in Middlesex NJ. This could be the prequel movie that would redeme my favorite science fiction film. I for one would love to see it. I would really like peoples thoughts on this if they are Donnie Darko fans.

Thanks!

i seriously hate the directors cut edition,

i had to buy the original afterwards.

it ruins the artistic feel of it- the special, changed version on the directors cut.

i dont know why someone thought it was a good idea

Ok, I cant believe you also thought of making a prequel to Donnie Darko called Roberta Sparrow, ive been writing my own script for the past week, I only just stumbled across this site now to find youve thought up the exact same movie concept as i have. You clearly have an exceptional understanding of Donnie Darko, I agree with everything you said about S.Darko and i also noticed the mistake of Samantha having the book in her possesion, it cleary proves that the director had no understanding of Donnie Darko before writting S.Darko, rather ignorent really. Anyway, im writing this script, i write often and its the hardest project ive ever attempted, filling missing plot holes, thinking up a story to equel the original movie, to be honest its the kind of project only the director of Donnie Darko could or should be involved with, but as i work a boring night shift, its something to do lol. If you have any ideas id love to hear them, also, i was thinking of getting a petition going for the original drector to write a script for Roberta Sparrow, its a long shot but a few movies have seen the light of day because of it.

Haha, I'm actually pitching this exact idea in one of my film classes next week. We have to come up with a sequel/prequel that doesn't exist yet. I found your idea when searching for information about the idea.

So? How's the script for Roberta going?

Anyone?

Flyin Pigs look for information about the book she wrote The Philosophy of Time Travel by Roberta Sparrow. Watch the movie Donnie Darko again, look at the picture of her in the schools display case. She is key to entire movie even Gretchen's death takes place in front of Roberta Sparrows home. It is why she checks her mail box, she was to help Donnie complete the time loop and reset the world so that the universe wouldn't be destroyed by what happened when Donnie woke up because of Frank.

It is an amazing story if anyone cares to look into it further. Also as you watch the movie see where Donnie wakes up, it's the same place he is at with Gretchen after she is hit by the red car at the end of the film. As he enters town on his way home he is passed by the same red car driven by Frank that kills her later on in the movie. As he gets close to home there is a sign that gives the same date he is given by Frank as to the time of the end of the world. Awesome movie!

I haven't seen s. darko, but I read somewhere that the concept is of a tangent universe inside another. I think I've got an idea for the script writer to fill this "Why does she have the book?" hole. Perhaps after the events Sparrow experienced, she has a greater knowledge of time travel and finds a way to set a tangent universe in motion, also sending Samantha the book. Upon the time the second tangent universe occurs, Samantha has received the book. In this way, it may be possible that Samantha's actions save the primary universe two fold in the most recent tangent, but also in Sparrow's tangent. Due to Sparrow's tangent collapsing, this may in fact save Donnie from his ultimate fate. This could further prove Sparrow's in-depth knowledge of time travel by suggesting she knew of Donnie being trapped by a tangent 44 years later.

Sorry, but I just realized I left the hole open. xD Sparrow may begin her tangent universe by placing an object of metal inside the book, such as a thin strip in the binding. In this way, the book becomes the artifact. Maybe Samantha receives it in the mail and must collapse both tangents, then causing the book to never appear in the primary. But I dunno, I should probably watch s. darko first.
