The Children of Sol
Many people around the globe are in speculation as to what is happening to our world at this point in time, many consider the present day as a key turning point in the history of our world. Here we are into the new millennium. But what does it mean to live in these times?
So much has happened in the last two hundred years during the times of industry, science, and technology. Advances in social engineering and technology have helped to create a different world than anything the pioneers of its fruits could have even imagined. Could the Wright Brothers ever have conceived of a space shuttle or even a 747? Did Edison imagine that the world would run 24/7 on the electricity he'd discovered. The answer is no... no they saw a need and through science they made it available to the people. This technology also brought death and more precise means of warfare to our world and from them much suffering has been created. But advances in medicine like antibiotics and sterilization have prevented outbreaks of plague and other types of communicable diseases that once ravaged our societies. For better or worse our world has both suffered and benefited from these advances.
All these discoveries have made for a life of commerce, a life that is better in the worlds first world nations and hence is much easier than life was not even a hundred years ago. With vehicles and mass transit to get us from point A to B, the fuel on which those vehicles are run lead to the delivery of our food to central grocery hubs for our purchase and consumption, electronics and communications have enabled us to keep track and use our money without having to ever carry currency. From farms to cities society has changed and is now hooked (yes I said hooked!) on these enabling technologies.
We have become like junkies, hooked on instant gratification and leisure. Kings and Queens of old never had the luxuries of air conditioning and refrigeration, they weren't able communicate over distance at the touch of a button. These things have made all of us Kings and Queens of our worlds. Soft beds, fast foods... we have become lazy, fixed to our gratification and hooked on the instant when our wants are fulfilled.
So what has any of this got to do with the global feeling that something is going to happen? Well when the party has been raging for as long as it has, at some point we all know that we've reached the apex of the night. These times are like the minute before midnight when the party is out of control the cops are on the scene and the party-goers are either in handcuffs or are running for their cars to get the heck out of there. We all have a sense that the balance between the haves and the have-nots has reached a tipping point. That our environment is on the brink of destruction, and that our world has only so much left for us to consume. Call me Chicken Little because I am.
But I digress; perhaps it's not about the fact that we have the ability to make or break our world. We the all powerful master's of our universe forget that we are not gods. Mother nature has a funny way of showing us the power and awesomeness of her greatness.
So much has been said about the year 2012... fringe groups and conspiracy nuts have all grabbed hold of the Mayan Long Count calendar end period of December 21st, 2012 as the key time that our world will come to and end. This 28,000 year cycle coincides with many astronomical alignments happening at this exact time. It has almost become and industry in and of itself, much like Y2K had become at the end of the 1900's. But this type of hype has shadowed the truth of the meaning behind the end count of the Mayans.
The Mayans were astronomers and sun and moon worshipers. They followed the cycles of the sun, observed the seasons and their associations with astronomical events and cycles and they were able to forecast the procession of our world through space and its orbit around the sun by using these ancient technological observations and tools such as obelisks and their calendars. They found cycles much like astronomers talk about today. Some years were hotter than others, some colder, over longer periods of time floods of even droughts were observed and these events also seemed to follow these cyclic patterns. This allowed the Mayans to create the long count calendar, and for the Mayans this was nothing more than a way of life.
That the Mayans ended their calendar on 2012 was to them probably nothing more than the end of a cycle and the restart of another. I doubt they really considered the impacts that the ending of their calendar would have on the people of today. They like those pioneers of technology today didn't see the impact that this would have on today's world.
There is an interesting fact that coincides with the end of the long count calendar, this fact is that it lies smack dab in the middle of the solar maximum, this is an eleven year cycle in which the suns electromagnetic field is wound tightly and then as the outer equator of the sun spins faster than at it's poles the fields snap wildly and the suns surface comes to life with sun spots, solar flares, and prominences. These events would have had little effect on the Mayan culture that to predict growing patterns and places in which to settle their dwellings. Today however is a much different story.
Should this solar cycle turn out to be an exceptionally strong cycle, the earth may be in for a series of solar storms. We have seen these storms before, one even caused a black out in Canada in 1989 that lasted a matter of hours. But that was just a weaker storm. There was one solar storm over a century ago in the 1800s that caused the telegraph system to catch on fire. This was prior to electrical grids satellites and other technologies that our junky society is so addicted to. Our commerce society would grind to a screeching halt if one of these storms were to reach us and a series of these storms would cripple our society.
The children born after 2001 are the children born into the world right before and after the Solar Event takes place. They are the Children of Sol. They will be born of parents who were used to having what they wanted and who knew nothing of true strife. They will witness great suffering and bear witness that their parents and their fore-bearers had lost their way. This will not be the end of our world, but it will be the beginning of a much more compassionate and locally organized world of citizens that will be able to create the balance that our world lacks with their environment and that can adapt more easily to its changes.
For many thousands of years, ancient and primitive societies have worshiped the Sun as a god of awesome power, long before power grids, space craft, and commerce dotted our modern landscapes. In ancient Egypt the god Ra was a sun deity, in Rome it was Solis, to the Germanics Sol, to the Greeks Helios, to the Vedic Surya, in South America Inti... Why did all these cultures separated by time and distance all believe that the Sun was a god? Because the sun has the power to give and take life. The delicate balance that exists on our world is so fragile that even a two degree difference in the global average temprature could mean the difference between drought and a deep freeze. Either way the crops die and the people starve. The same goes for today my friends, the same power to give and take life is still there. The shift in our consciousness is not something elusive and newly discovered. No it has been with us all along. There is no profound prophecy that we need to see that the balance is fragile, from global warming to ice ages these cycles are here in our world. The question is... Will we adapt to our world and those changes?
